Wililam and Isabelle Carter and their daughter, Jamie, took several trips in their yacht "The Isabelle" down the Charles River from their slip at Carter's Landing in Allston, Massachusetts and along the coast of Maine. They were amateur sailors and these notebooks offer a disarming look at a life of simple ease during the summers, probably starting in 1912 and ending in 1915 or 1916. Their adventures centered on the natural beauty of places along the way, on humorous adventures and mishaps, and a few visits with friends. Each summer for five summers a different journal was kept. These are illustrated with photographs often surrounded by an ink frame, sometimes with humorous captions; and some quite skilled and charming watercolors. Each is a hand-made journal of heavy watercolor paper about 6 1/2 x 7 inches and bound in limp leather. One of the voyages is recorded in mock epic style, two in rhyming couplets, one in straight narrative, and one in blank verse.
